MAUREEN HORAN
MSW, LSW
Maureen Horan, LSW, LSW, became involved with Suicide Prevention Services in 2020 as a Bachelor of Social Work intern from Aurora University. She had previously received a Bachelor of Communication degree from Northern Illinois University in 2017 and has additional degrees in Bachelor of Social Work (2021) and Master of Social Work (2022) both from Aurora University. Upon graduation she was offered the position of Coordinator of Hotline Services, which she enthusiastically accepted.
Maureen has her licensure in social work and is working towards obtaining her clinical license in social work. Along with that license, she is also looking to get her certificate in drug and alcohol counseling soon. She has a passion for working with those dealing with substance abuse issues along with depression, anxiety, and ADHD. Maureen likes to incorporate mindfulness into her therapy because she understands the importance of practicing mindfulness while in recovery and the benefits that can come from mindfulness when someone struggles with anxiety.
Through working with many adolescents and some young adults, Maureen has begun to see the need to incorporate more “Geek Therapy” into her sessions and has begun doing this little by little; this is achieved by relating ideas and concepts from video games or role-playing games, like personal stats, into real life in order to gauge where a client sees their strengths and how they can improve their more weaker areas of life. She hopes to someday be able to fully incorporate “Geek Therapy” with clients as it is needed.
In her free time, Maureen loves to craft with her Cricut and can frequently be seen at home working on a new project. She has a dog, Finn, and a cat, Dean, that she loves to absolute pieces. If she isn’t at home working on a craft, reading, or playing video games, she is probably at some comic con in the Midwest area helping facilitate video game tournaments and selling her crafts on the side. She loves all things fandom related and could talk anyone’s ear off about the latest Taylor Swift news.
