Depression Screening at Suicide Prevention Services of America

What is a depression screening?

A depression screening is a series of questions discussed with a mental health professional to help determine the likelihood that a person is struggling with depression. The questions discussed between you and the professional are about topics such as your mood, thoughts, physical health and care, as well as how those factors are impacting your day-to-day functioning, and safety from suicide or self-harm.

Who can make an appointment for a depression screening?

Anyone who is concerned that they or a child/teen under their care could be struggling with their mental health or having thoughts of suicide can make an appointment for a depression screening. Children must be 5 years old or older to receive this service.

A depression screening also typically takes place at the first appointment for someone who is initiating counseling at SPSA.

What happens during the depression screening?

You will meet with a mental health professional one-on-one to discuss the screening questions and topics. During the depression screening, the mental health professional may also refer you to vital resources and work with you to create a safety plan.

What happens after the depression screening?

After the depression screening is complete, the mental health professional will make recommendations based on the screening and their expertise on what the next steps for treatment could be. A recommendation could be beginning counseling services with SPSA or referring the patient to another mental health or health care professional.
